A 44-year-old former NFL star, known for his time with the Cleveland Browns, has tragically passed away in a car accident. His funeral is being held today, as reported by the Akron Beacon Journal.

The former running back, who had a notable moment in the 2001 season with the Browns, is remembered for a crucial touchdown he scored against the Super Bowl-winning Baltimore Ravens, contributing to a 27–17 victory. Despite this standout performance, his NFL career included only one other touchdown.

After retiring from football, he worked as a welder and remained actively involved in his community. He married Margarita in February 2012, and the couple had three children together: a son, two daughters, and a granddaughter. A devoted Christian, he was also engaged with Platte Valley Baptist Church in Fort Morgan, Colorado.

Born Benjamin Stevenson Gay Jr. in Houston, Texas, he was honored as a USA Today first-team All-American following his time at Spring High School. He continued his education at Baylor University and Garden City Community College, ultimately earning a Master’s degree in Biology. Before his NFL career, he played for the Edmonton Eskimos in Canada.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media, with friends and fans reflecting on his impact both on and off the field. They have shared memories of his contributions as a player and his personal qualities. The Associated Press has confirmed the car accident, but further details have not yet been released.

The Rowanoak Mortuary & Crematory in Fort Morgan, Colorado, is managing the funeral arrangements, with additional details about the memorial service expected to be announced soon.
